The “one rein emergency stop” is over-taught and over-used. It is a cookie-cutter answer that is an attempt to help keep people safer without really developing better preparation and understanding. When we and our horses understand response in spite of trouble, we can regain their focus with one rein, redirecting forward motion and getting our conversation back. When a horse spooks they typically want to move their feet and if our only answer is “stop” it actually goes against their nature. Instead, we want to work from where their brain is at (movement) to get their brain to where we want it to be (back in our responsive conversation). Get the bend back, get the brain back.
