2020 Ranch Tour, Colorado: 21-30th May

Ben Longwell Ben Longwell Ben Longwell

After 6 years of successful Ranch Tours over 2014-2019 we are nearly fully booked for both of our Ranch Tours in Montana a year in advance. In 2020 we have something very exciting happening....3 different Ranch Tours! We are also going to a new Ranch in Colorado for a whole new adventure.

Guests will join Ben for a real "True Grit" Spring Cattle Work experience on a Ranch in the east central Colorado high praries. This Ranch Tour will not be up everyone's alley and is not a typical "guest ranch" experience - as it will be work like the Cowboys would have done 100 years ago on the range - long days in the saddle & accomodation in Cowboy wall tents (although you will have a proper bed, rather than a bed roll on the ground, amazing food and bathroom facilities). Please call or email to discuss with us if you think this Ranch Tour is suitable for you!

Below is a layout of potentially how the trip will look! Spots are strictly limited, so if you are interested – do not delay in letting us know!

Ben Longwell Where:
We will be travelling to experience the life of the true cowboy on this 87,000-acre family-run, working cattle ranch that operates on the high prairie in east central Colorado. They use age-old ranching practices, progressive grazing management and innovative business strategies to maintain healthy land and animals. You will join Ben and our small Ranch Tour Group and fully immerse yourselves in the ranching lifestyle, living and working alongside the ranch crew. The work you do is essential to the operation and you will feel a strong sense of contribution at the end of your stay.

We have locked in our 2020 dates May 21-30th.
Ben will escort this Tour from Denver, CO and will meet guests at the hotel on the afternoon of Thursday 21st May. After our welcome dinner, we will have a couple of days spent shopping, before heading out to the Ranch for 5 nights. After the Ranch stay, Ben will take you 'back to town' for another night and a 'last hurrah' dinner with the group! The escorted part of the trip will end in Denver on the morning of Saturday 30th May, when you will have the opportunity to book further travel in the US (read further down for more info).

A bit different:
Our Tour to Colorado will be a whole different adventure from our Montana Tour, if you have joined us on that experience. Here you are going to have more of a true historic cowboy adventure - time to get down and dirty and "rub some dirt in it". During the 5 night stay at the Ranch, we are going to join the ranch staff in a wide assortment of daily ranch work. Most things are done horseback and can include branding, sorting, and moving cattle from pasture to pasture. Other activities include fencing work, water infrastructure projects, pasture checks, animal care, horse training, and conservation work. Downtime is always an option as well - we might do long days in the saddle and may start early, but we can beat the heat of the day - leaving the afternoon free for a swim, fish or reading a good book.

Horsemanship & Stockmanship:
Practical horsemanship lessons will be given on the trail - with emphasis on safely building practical communication with your horse. Stockmanship will be taught - the art of handling cattle horseback in a low stress and humane manner.

Ben will escort you in the American West where he is originally from! If you have only ever travelled to California or New York – you are missing out on an incredible part of the country, as every region in America is so diverse.

We will have shopping and activity days on the 22nd & 23rd in Denver, then head down to Colorado Springs and visit a historic ghost town museum before heading to the Ranch on the 24th.

Guests will have 5 night stay at the Ranch, participating in real ranch work, moving cattle, riding horses and learning roping, horsemanship & stockmanship.
Spring is a busy time of year for the ranch crew - saddle your own horse, enjoy the long trot out at dark to see the sunrise over the prairie on your way to gather cattle. Each day you will become part of the working team and given real responsibilities, gathering/moving and checking fence/water & herd health throughout the week. You may be part of the branding crew that will hold the herd, assist with vaccinations and ear notching or doctoring. At the end of the day, relax in camp with dinner on the prairie, practice roping, read a good book or head down to the lake for a swim.

As the Ranch has its own leather workshop, our guests will be able to spend an afternoon to learn a craft that was born on the ranch out of necessity from a team that is now making products for international brands. Guests can watch and learn practical skills such as pattern making, tooling and all of the steps that go into finishing leather for high quality tack, gear & saddles.

After our final night at the Ranch - we will load up and head for 1 more night in town with a fancy dinner to end our Tour with a bang (and a hotel bed to sleep in)!

Ben Longwell Shopping:
Friday and Saturday we have time for shopping! Ben will make sure he gets you to the local tack shops, saddlery and western stores. We suggest packing your suitcase light or booking an additional bag on the return trip to accommodate all your new purchases. We have had a couple of guests on our Tours buy a new western saddle and we have a great contact to ship this back to NZ for you cheaper than post!

Historic Ghost Town Museum:
Sunday morning Ben will take the guests to a Ghost Town Museum where buildings and authentic artifacts were rescued from the local region and have been preserved indoors, all looking much as they would have 100 years ago during the gold rush. You can even try your hand at panning for gold while there!

The hotels we will stay in are 3+ stars - you may choose to have your own room (single occupancy price) or shared (double occupancy price) in the hotels we stay in.

At the Ranch, there is no better way to connect with your surroundings than to sleep close to nature and enjoy meals at a dining table in the middle of the prairie. Your Cowboy tent will be equipped with a comfortable bed (no sleeping in bedrolls on the ground). Unlike the Cowboys living on the range 100yrs ago - you will also have bathrooms with a good hot shower which are shared between guests and a short walk from each private tent.
At your camp there will also be a "lounge tent" - with come comfy sofas so you can read a good book or hang out with the group!

During the tour all food for breakfasts at your hotels and dinners in Denver & Colorado Springs are included in the package price. 1 drink at dinner is included, additional drinks are left up to the individual to purchase.
3 Lunches while shopping (Fri/Sat/Sun) are up to individuals - we will take you to local restaurants - but meal cost and choice are up to you.

On the Ranch each morning your cook prepares coffee and a hearty breakfast over a fire before you head down to saddle your horse and enjoy the day. After a hard day’s work enjoy an outdoor hot shower and relax in camp before supper is called. Expect bison pot roast, local produce salads, dutch oven baked breads and a cold drink while watching the sunset over the mountains.

Alcohol at the Ranch is BYO – before we head out of Colorado Springs we will stop for anyone who would like to purchase their own wine/beer/soda to have during dinner time. Any sort of alcohol is not permitted prior to or during riding activities. There will not be a 'town run' during the week on the Ranch - so bring what you may need.

Travel Insurance:
Insurance is required, but as many people like to make their own arrangements for this or have the option free with their credit card – this price is not included in the package price. Please make sure you are covered for horse riding!
As the payments are non-refundable (due to our payment contract with the Ranch) we suggest getting insurance in place from the moment you decide to come on our Tour with us.

Further Travel:
As one of your biggest costs is the price of airline tickets to and from the US – we recommend making additional travel plans after the Escorted Tour is finished. You will be in Denver, CO - close to the magnificent Rocky Mountain region – which is a real highlight when visiting the States - it is easy to hire a car and explore! If you would like further ideas of things to see in the American West, we would be happy to make suggestions.

Ben Longwell Opportunity to Disconnect:
Cell service can be spotty at the ranch. While the majority of the guests love the opportunity to disconnect from technology, we understand some may not have the choice depending on their profession, but please be prepared for spotty or little-to-no service. There is no place at camp to charge devices - so guests will need to bring a portable charger for their electronics.

Weight Limit/Riding Ability:

As you will be ‘in the saddle’ for most of the week we recommend this trip for experienced riders. The Ranch has a riding/weight suggestion that: "Guests should be fit enough to be able to mount from the ground unassisted. In general, participants should comfortably handle their own weight. Due to the nature of our horseback work, we recommend that all guests have previous riding experience"

Group Size & Age Restriction:
We have a min of 6 guests on the trip to secure the exclusive use of the Ranch and a max of 12 guests. The trip is designed for those 16 years and over.

Most Kiwis have a bit of a hard time or feel a little intimidated with this concept as we are just not use to tipping – it’s just a part of life in the US. We can help you out with this, but for the main part of this trip – we have included it in the price.

Flights are NOT included in your package price. Guests have the choice to either to arrange their flights with their own travel agent or book flights themselves. We will not be working with a recommended travel agent this year. There are both direct flights from LAX or SFO to DEN or you can fly with stop-overs.
